Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 16, 1920, based on the four principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood by five coeds at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

To honor, the principle of Scholarship, Ascent Educational Foundation, (AEF) Inc. operates as the philanthropic arm for Sigma Mu Zeta, Zeta Phi Beta, Sorority, Inc. AEF annually offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have been accepted to institutions of higher education. Its primary purpose is to assist students, and their parents prepare for and finance a collegiate education. AEF distinguishes itself by offering scholarships and resources to students attending traditional and non-traditional educational programs. AEF also presents programs throughout the year to assist the students and their parents in the transition from high school to post-secondary education.
